Folly Beach Parks

Shadow Race Park is the City’s most recently developed space on Third Block of W. Ashley Ave. It is a unique and peaceful park that encourages calm activities and programs such as ladybug releases and bird watching. The landscaping has chosen plantings and fixtures meant to draw in unique local wildlife.

This is the third lighthouse to occupy this site, off the coast of Charleston. Construction started in 1872 and it took four years to build, operating the light for the first time on October 1, 1876. The tower leans slightly toward the NE and we believe it has slowly done so since the earthquake of 1886, along with the slow erosion of the very sand it sits on out in the ocean. The lighthouse can be accessed via the Lighthouse Inlet at the end of East Ashley Avenue, or via the beach.

Folly Park amenities include 2500 feet of ocean frontage, 200 feet of river frontage, dressing areas, outdoor showers, restrooms, boardwalks, picnic areas, and more. Skimmer Flats, a major Eastern Brown Pelican rookery, is visible at the west end of the park.
